Art

Intent

At Coatham Primary School we cover the entire EYFS, KS1 and KS2 National Curriculum For Art. It is our belief that all children should have access to the Arts in order to foster a lifelong love and appreciation of this subject. We want all our children to experience the learning of the whole curriculum, with creativity, enquiry, practical learning and cross-curricular links. Our Art curriculum is designed to engage, inspire and challenge children, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to participate in, experiment with, invent and create their own works of art. Children will be empowered to think creatively and critically. They will investigate and evaluate a wide range of creative outcomes from the past and present to develop deep understanding of the many disciplines within art and how they shape our past and future, so that our children, “learn not for school, but for life”.

Implementation

Art is planned through cross-curricular planning on a half-termly basis. Art has dedicated time each term. The Art curriculum is built around essential knowledge, understanding and key skills. These are broken into year group expectations and show clear continuity and progress. Work is planned through rigorous focus on AfL and Next Steps in planning; work is therefore planned and implemented to the needs of the children in long, medium, and short-term. Art is assessed half termly and is given time during transition planning for classes going into the next year group. The Art Subject Leader monitors, supports, challenges and assesses the teaching and learning of art through dedicated termly leadership time. SENDco and SLT monitor, support and challenge the inclusion and success for all groups and individuals.

Impact

The impact of our Art curriculum can be seen not only in our children’s sketch books but also throughout the school environment. Each pupil will: experience a broad, balanced arts curriculum, with an emphasis on the development of understanding and skills in art experience the arts through other areas of the curriculum.be given a wide range of opportunities to express themselves creatively. The vast majority of children meet end of year predictions in Art.
