National Curriculum Information

At Coatham, we have decided to use the flexibility which the new KS1 and KS2 National Curriculum offers to run our teaching through whole-school half-termly themes and class books/novels, including Foundation Stage.  All of the subject areas and curriculum content for each Year Group are delivered through the context of this theme and books, which allows us to run whole-school events and further details to further the children’s learning.  This year (2018) our themes will be:

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

The curriculum for pupils in Nursery and Reception remains the same. It covers 7 areas of learning development. Children should mostly develop the 3 prime areas first, as these are the skills most essential for healthy development and future learning:

* Communication and language (speaking and listening)

* Physical development (PE and large scale play)

* Personal, social and emotional development

As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific areas:

* Literacy (Reading and Writing)

* Mathematics

* Understanding the world (Science, ICT, History, Geography and RE)

* Expressive arts and design (Art, Music, Dance and Design Technology)

To find out more about these areas of learning visit Foundation Years website

READING

We use the Renaissance reading scheme, which levels “real books” through school for us to use with different children as appropriate to their reading age.  Younger readers (end of EYFS and start of KS1) use Oxford Reading Tree Scheme, stages 1-7.

PHONICS

We follow an adapted version of the Letters and Sounds programme to deliver our Phonics teaching across school.

We use the Direct Phonics and Lexia programmes to teach phonics where needed in KS2
